Did you know Tethered Drones can spray photocatalytic coatings onto structures that then pull significant quantities of NOx gas out of the air for years?

News today reported the city of Beijing China has shut roads, school playgrounds, and more due to heavy smog pollution. Outdoor air pollution is one of the world's largest health and environmental problems. Smog is a leading risk factor for premature death; responsible for 3.4 million deaths worldwide each year.

A major component of air pollution is nitrogen oxides, namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2). These gases contribute to form smog and acid rain, as well as affecting tropospheric ozone. PURETi, a NASA Dual-Use Technology Partner, is a sprayable coating that transforms harmful NOx gasses into simple harmless substances to clean the air just as plants do. Apellix, under a Joint Development Agreement with AkzoNobel, is developing an aerial robotic system (a spray painting drone) capable of applying over 12,000 ft2 of coating per hour, with commercial airless spray systems, 20x faster than a person.

Apellix Project Breathe® proposes applying the PURETi to buildings, highway overpasses, and various structures to reduce the smog of millions of car trips. It is estimated every 100 square feet coated with PURETi correspond to 100 feet of forest, thus neutralizing smog and saving lives.
